Engine Repairs (Common Faults):
- Engine Won’t Start: This could be due to a dead battery, faulty starter motor, issues with the ignition system (spark plugs, coils), or fuel delivery problems.
- Engine Misfires or Runs Rough: Often caused by worn or fouled spark plugs, faulty ignition coils, incorrect air-fuel mixture, or issues with fuel injectors.
- Engine Overheating: Can result from low coolant levels, a malfunctioning thermostat, a leak in the cooling system (radiator, hoses), or a faulty water pump.
- Engine Makes Unusual Noises: Knocking, rattling, or whining sounds can indicate problems with belts, pulleys, bearings, or internal engine components.
- Oil Leaks: Caused by worn seals, gaskets, or loose bolts, leading to low oil levels and potential engine damage.
- Check Engine Light: Can illuminate for a multitude of reasons, from a loose gas cap to more serious engine or emissions system issues.
Transmission Repairs (Common Faults):
- Slipping Gears: The transmission may unexpectedly shift into a different gear or fail to stay in the selected gear. This can be due to low or contaminated transmission fluid, a worn clutch (in manual transmissions), or internal transmission problems.
- Difficulty Shifting Gears: This can occur in both manual and automatic transmissions and may be caused by a worn clutch, low or incorrect transmission fluid, or internal mechanical issues.
- Transmission Fluid Leaks: Reddish or brown fluid puddles under the car can indicate leaks from seals, gaskets, or the transmission pan. Low fluid levels can lead to significant transmission damage.
- Unusual Noises: Whining, humming, or clunking sounds, especially during gear changes, can signal transmission problems.
- Delayed Engagement: A noticeable delay when shifting from park to drive or reverse can indicate a transmission issue.
- Burning Smell: Can be a sign of an overheating transmission due to low fluid or excessive strain.
Brake Repairs (Common Faults):
- Worn Brake Pads and Rotors: These are wear items that require periodic replacement to maintain adequate stopping power. Signs include squealing, grinding noises, or a longer stopping distance.
- Spongy or Low Brake Pedal: Can indicate air in the brake lines or a problem with the master cylinder.
- Car Pulling to One Side During Braking: May be due to uneven brake wear, a stuck caliper, or a problem with the brake hydraulics.
- ABS Light On: Indicates a problem with the anti-lock braking system.
Suspension and Steering (Common Faults):
- Worn Shocks and Struts: Lead to a bouncy or unstable ride, poor handling, and increased braking distances.
- Worn Bushings: Rubber or polyurethane components that cushion suspension joints can wear out, causing clunking noises and loose handling.
- Worn Ball Joints and Tie Rod Ends: These are crucial for steering and can cause looseness, play in the steering wheel, and uneven tire wear.
- Misaligned Wheels: Can result from hitting potholes or general wear and tear, leading to uneven tire wear and poor handling.
- Power Steering Problems: Can manifest as difficulty turning the steering wheel or unusual noises from the power steering pump. Low power steering fluid or a faulty pump are common causes.
- Clunking or Popping Noises: These sounds when going over bumps or turning can indicate worn suspension or steering components.
